Nepal's Electoral Scene Witnesses Significant Partnership Formed By Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable development ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the wake of widespread and fatal youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which led to considerable loss of life.

"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.

The September revolt was sparked by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding allegations of systemic political corruption.

Details of the New Political Partnership

According to the official agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the country's established political class. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Political Consultations Taking Place

In a separate event, the current interim prime minister recently held meetings with several leading political leaders. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the protests.

Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a collective duty. The message reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and fear-free environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
